IWD 2023: ‘CROP TOPS & HOODIES’ OUT NOW

This year's International Women's Day theme is #EmbraceEquity, and GIRLSofGRIME created this project to challenge the male-dominated music industry and to platform talented female voices. The collaborative record features talented young female artists from the UK, including Ariez Baby, Cassie Rytz, Frizz Price, and the dynamic duo AE. With only 3% of music played on the radio being produced by women, this project is crucial in advocating for more opportunities for women and encouraging gender balance in the music industry.

“GOOD GIRLS DON’T MAKE NO HISTORY”

As the 'Crop Tops and Hoodies' track comes to a close, the final verse repeats the phrase 'GOOD GIRLS DON'T MAKE NO HISTORY'. The lyrics, rapped by Els of AE, highlight the requirement for women to stand up and move against the grain in pursuit of real change! The outro is then followed by a straight-talking closing statement and call to action from Shakira Walters, Founding Director of GIRLSofGRIME. Directed at the community leaders and the industry gatekeepers the full transcript can also be read below.

With original compositions by Producer Paks and co-production by female producer and engineer Ronavella, the track features each artist's unique perspective on womanhood. GIRLSofGRIME and IWD 2023 want to empower women across the globe, in all industries and walks of life, to write and record their own freestyles and share stories in their own versions of the track.

Join the movement towards gender equity by creating your own version of the track. Download the "Crop Tops & Hoodies" instrumental, record & share on social media, tagging us @girlsofgrime.

CLOSING STATEMENT - #EmbraceEquity

"This is more than just music, it’s our culture.

For too long women have played small,

Whilst contributing on a massive scale to society

I mean, we did birth you guys, right?

And this isn’t about to be some anti-man statement.

It’s a call to action to everybody to help raise up our future females - TOGETHER!!

The music industry is the soundtrack of our everyday lives.

And it’s an ongoing conversation about ‘male-dominated’ spaces & the gender disparities.

All the equality signal posts are great.

But real life equitable action is what we need right now!!

I am Shakira Walters, the Founder Director of GIRLSofGRIME

And this International Women’s Day 2023, I Embrace Equity."
