Chey - Sweet
My lovelies, welcome back to the The GOG Review! I hope everyone is enjoying this strange beautiful heatwave we're having at the moment. Stay safe and wear sun-cream!
I've got a banger for you today, one perfect to go alongside a cheeky rum punch in the garden in this glorious sunshine. It deserves to be played at top volume, and equally deserves to be played on repeat all day.
The absolute banger in question is a brand new release from multi-faceted creative Chey, and it's titled 'Sweet'. Produced and engineered by the legendary Whodini, Chey rides this riddim with complete ease, and has the most perfect, energetic visual to match.
Filmed by her talented partner Mon, working alongside her in their media company Brand590, and edited of course by herself. This cleverly simple video is taken up a hundred notches by the brilliant editing. The open locations offer many opportunities to squeeze in some interesting post-production techniques, and the pair have smashed it out the water.
With the light, flowing instrumental, Chey's strong voice carries the waviest vibe through-out the track, matched with a deep sample used across the intro and hooks. Chey consistently speaks on how she's battled through each war in her life, and how each tackle has made her a stronger and more independent artist and human. Being completely self-sufficient, you can feel this resonating through each bar, and certain lyrics such as "people come and they go, I learnt to be fine with it, can't be killing my vibe and shit" suggest that Chey will always strive for the win, and no matter who tries to fuck with her - they will never succeed.
"Breaking bread with my gs'dem, going hard every season, out here on my weekdays, still hustling on my weekends" shows the extent of Chey's tunnel vision, focused purely on her elevation and success, and as someone who knows Chey personally, I can vouch for this. The damn girl never stops. Between being an incredible Rap artist, Chey also works as a videographer, editor, photographer and, as I said earlier, runs her own media company Brand590. She never stops.
Inspired by her long musical past, and heavily talented family, Chey knows her sound and style, and performs it to an exceptional standard. Each track ups her levels even more, highlighting her open and expressive flow with her incredibly clever rhyming schemes and thought processes. 'Sweet' is a particular favourite of mine, as the riddim provides the perfect backing for her tone of voice, and gives her the space she needs to fit her feelings into every lyric. The clever working of the sampled hook and her adlib 'Sweet' provides a naughty, catchy chorus that will be stuck in your head for days.
The visual for 'Sweet' can be found on Chey's own YouTube channel, and the audio can be streamed across all major digital platforms. Make sure you subscribe, like and comment to keep up to date with Chey and her stunning work-rate.
